LIST OF TEXTS QUOTED IN THE DICTIONARY
Dates in this List of Texts are often approximate
and their main function is to allow readers to ascertain whether
a given quotation (or a given sense, or a given word) is principally
found in (for example) early or late texts. Readers
are reminded that AND is a semantic, not a historical dictionary: the absence
of an early quotation in an entry does not necessarily mean
that the word or sense concerned is not attested before (or for that
matter, after) the date of the quotations supplied.
Dates are indicated
according to the following system (dates given are merely examples):
| |
s.xiii |
13th century |
| |
s.xiiiin, s.xiiiex |
beginning
or end of 13th century |
| |
mid-s.xiii |
mid-13th century |
| |
s.xiii1, s.xiii2 |
first or second
half of 13th century |
| |
s.xiii2/4 |
second quarter
of 13th century |
| |
s.xiii1/3 |
first third
of 13th century |
| |
s.xiii (MS.) |
13th century (date of manuscript) |
Many of the texts used in AND are in fact compilations
extending over more than two centuries. First and last dates
in these cases will need to be checked against the original text
if greater precision is sought. In some cases, too, texts seemingly
in Latin contain Anglo-Norman elements which may have been used for
the Dictionary. The indication ‘(A-N documents)’ is used where
the dates proposed are those of Anglo-Norman documents only, within
a larger compilation extending over a longer time-span.
The List of Texts includes, where available, the
sigla adopted by the industry-standard DEAF (Dictionnaire
étymologique de l’ancien français) and this electronic version links each DEAF
siglum to its entry in the DEAF Complément bibliographique, offering
further (often very detailed) information, including clarification
of the relationships between groups of overlapping texts. The editors
wish to thank most warmly Frankwalt Möhren and his colleagues for
their assistance in this and many other matters .
Where a DEAF entry is not available, the dates
assigned to particular texts are usually those supplied by the editor
of the text concerned; though some (especially those which refer
to manuscripts rather than to texts) are derived from R.J. Dean, Anglo-Norman
Literature: A Guide to Texts and Manuscripts, ANTS Occasional
Publication Series 3 (London, 1999)
From this electronic version, it is possible to
see a list of all the citations from each source in the AND by clicking on the "Citations" link after each item.
