The Anglo-Norman On-Line Hub project has two major components: the digitisation of the Anglo-Norman Dictionary, and the placing on line of as large a proportion as is economically feasible and technically possible of the sources on which that Dictionary draws, in a form that allows their lexical content to be scrutinised using the full potential of electronic text processing. The use of the Dictionary component is fully documented in links from this page. The documentation for the Textbase is currently being finalised and will appear here shortly. However, the search interface for the Textbase has been deliberately designed to be as close as possible in appearance, facilities and operation to the Dictionary (citation) search facilities which are documented already, and users should have no difficulty in making use of the Textbase even before the full documentation becomes available. |
| Introduction to the Anglo-Norman Dictionary for the General Public | |
Visitors who are curious about why this site exists and what purposes it serves are invited to take a Guided Tour of selected aspects. This section of the site reproduces the contents of a CD ROM designed to outline to a general readership the purpose, history, editorial procedures and applications of the Dictionary, and to provide some illustrations of how Anglo-Norman has influenced modern English. It contains no practical or technical information about how to use the Dictionary or the Textbase, and should not be treated as a guide to using the Dictionary in particular or this site in general . |

| What is XML and what use is it? Some answers from a Humanities perspective. Written in 2000 for a mainly undergraduate audience, this piece predates the Anglo-Norman Hub project. But since that entire project is built upon XML markup, it may serve as an elementary introduction for readers who want to know some of the basic features and possibilities of XML in a Humanities context. | |
| Digitising the Anglo-Norman Dictionary. This was a background paper prepared for a meeting of (mainly Old French) lexicographers hosted by the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences in the Summer of 2001, when the AND digitisation had only recently begun. Though in some respects now overtaken by later developments and experiences, it still provides a basic introduction to how and why we approach things. | |
