For
Windows users, we strongly recommend the use of Netscape 7.2, Mozilla
1.8+, Firefox 1.5 or later, or Internet Explorer 6.0. Some features of the
site will not function correctly in IE 5.0, but IE 5.5 works satisfactorily
for the most part.
For Macintosh users with OS X, Netscape 7.2 or any recent Mozilla or Firefox
build is much preferable to any Mac version of IE, which will not work at all
with some of the site's features. Recent builds of Safari
are also reported to work satisfactorily, although this browser is not currently
supported. Under Mac OS9, only the last OS9
build (1.2) of Mozilla, obtainable from www.mozilla.org,
will allow full
access to all features of the site. Unofficial builds of later versions of
Mozilla are also available for Mac OS9, but since their availability and
location is variable, you are advised to look for further information from
sites specialising in OS9 support.
For Linux, NS 7.2 or Mozilla 1.8+ or Firefox 1.5 or later are likewise
recommended. Other browers based on the Gecko rendering engine (Galeon,
Konqueror etc) work to some extent, but all have problems in specific areas:
in particular the drop down menus for selecting wordlists are not usable in
Konqueror.
For users who must employ OS/2, Mozilla is the only available browser for
that platform sufficiently standards-compliant to work properly with the ANOH
material. The same applies to Solaris.
Opera versions prior to 7.0
on all platforms had standards compliance
problems that stop it from supporting essential features of the
site (e.g.
the menus for selecting partial headword lists). Opera 7.0 and
later works
with these menus, but there are still problems with other features
of the
site. Opera 8 has unusual behaviour both in its handling
of mouse double-clicks and its positioning of popup windows,
and so this browser is neither recommended nor supported.
Netscape 8.0 on any platform for which there is a version will work, but you
will need some knowledge of how to alter its default configuration when
opening new windows etc. There are other problems related to some versions
of this browser on Windows, though not in any way specific to the AND, so
it might be better not to install in unless you have access to expert support.
Because of its seriously inadequate support of key W3C standards, we do not
recommend the use of Netscape 4 (or earlier) on any platform or under any
circumstances, and its use will lead to difficulties that are beyond our
power to remedy.
