According to the DMLBS the word is a rendering of Welsh priodawr, derived from Latin proprietarius. See GPC (A Dictionary of the Welsh Language) sub priod, sense d. ‘true owner or possessor’ (which, incidentally, suggests Latin privatus as the etymon.
