engaret (s.xii2)

FEW:  *warnjan *17,531a Gdf: GdfC: TL: DEAF:  engaret  DMF: TLF: OED: MED: DMLBS:

Originally the AND interpreted this word as a p.p. form of engarer, and the citation was included sub esgarer with the sense of 'to deceive, lead astray'. The editors of Aelfric gloss point out this error, reading Latin falere as a form of phalarae ('trappings, harness (esp. for horse)', DMLBS 2260b) and Old-English geraedu as ge-rǽde (Bosworth Toller, 'ornament, trapping'). They propose an association with the *warnjan word group, albeit with a problematic denasalization.
