The verb garochier is derived from the noun garrot which has multiple senses, including ‘crossbow’ and ‘length of wood inserted into a doubled rope and twisted in order to tension it’. It is not entirely clear which of these is relevant to the verbal form. The editor of Siege Antioche gabel tentatively suggests the sense ‘arrêter le mouvement (de qn); immobiliser (?)’; this may be too great an extension of the meaning. The verb seems to be used as a synonym for desgarochier, also attested in the same source text. It is therefore treated as an aphetic form of that verb and given the same definition.
