orpin (s.xiiiex)

[ gdw]

[ FEW: 25,1011a auripigmentum; Gdf: 5,644c orpin; GdfC: ; TL: 6,1300 orpin; DEAF:  orpin; DMF:  orpin; TLF:  orpin; OED:  orpine n.; MED:  orpin n.; DMLBS: 2059a orpina ]
horpyn;  orpine,  orpyn,  orpyne,  opie  91 opyn  260 (MS) ortyn  85.S47

The suggested etymology of orpin is that it is a condensed form of orpiment (literally ‘gold pigment’). Whereas in Anglo-Norman the two words seem to have developed with their two possible senses entirely separate, the two can be found combined in the respective orpin entries of FEW, TLF, TL and OED.
