The Classical Latin etymon, ostrinus, is derived from Ancient Greek ὀστρ(ε)ινος. The word’s literal meaning is ‘living in a shell’, but was already in Greek used to refer to the purple dye substance obtained from the glandular secretion of sea-snails (and thus, in general, the colour ‘purple’).
