FEW identifies this verb as a rare aphetic form of empeindre1 (from impingere) Although formally and perhaps even semantically very close to poindre1 (‘to prick, sting’, ‘to goad, spur’ or ‘to incite’), the distinct etyma mean two two separate entries are called for.
