polir1 (c.1136-65)

[ gdw]

[ FEW: 9,126b polire; Gdf: 6,264a polir; GdfC: 10,372a polir; TL: 7,1376 polir; DEAF:  polir; DMF:  poli  / polir; TLF:  poli  / polir; OED:  polish v. / polite a. and n.; MED:  polishen v. / polit(e a.; DMLBS: 2332a polire ]
pollir;
p.p. polit

The unusual sense of ‘embroidered’ of the adjectival usage is not attested elsewhere, and stems from the Latin and Middle English equivalent words (cf. MED steinen v.). However, it may be that the Anglo-Norman translator misinterpreted the Latin term polymito in the Vulgate (DMLBS polymitus, ‘(of cloth) woven or embroidered with threads of different colours’, from Greek πολυμιτος) as a derivation of polire, in which case the ‘breast-plate’ is to be understood in this Bible translation with the regular sense of ‘polished’ or ‘burnished’.
