postle (s.xiv1)

[gdw]

FEW:  apostolus *25,19b Gdf: GdfC: TL: DEAF:  apostle (*)  DMF: TLF: OED: MED: DMLBS:
postre

Aphetic form of apostole. The entry for apostle includes the unusual spelling variants - with a change of the initial vowel - epostle and epostre, only attested in Mir N-D and Turpin. In both cases the word is used with a definite article, with the editors reading l'epostle and l'epostre. These instances may also be interpreted as le postle and le postre and consequently considered further evidence of this aphetic form.
