The word quartet appears in English only from the early seventeenth century as a borrowing from Italian quartetto; cf. OED quartet n. With its -et suffix the word may be considered a spelling variant of quartée (attested in the DMF but not found in Anglo-Norman), but it may just as well be an error for quarter.
