grapeyer (1438)

FEW:  *krappa 16,360b Gdf: GdfC:  grappilleur 9,718a TL: DEAF:  grape (*) G1239 DMF: TLF: OED:  grappler  MED: DMLBS:

MED includes the form grapeyer in its entry for grape-iren n., apparently suggesting a variant spelling. However, the word is probably better interpreted as an agential derivative of the otherwise unattested verb *grapeier ('to grab'). In comparison, continental French has the etymologically related verb grappiller ('to seize'), hence grappilleur, 'one who seizes'.
