Although the exact equivalent is unattested in English, the word may be interpreted as a derivative of Middle English houve n. ('headdress, cap'; cf. OED houve n.), with the final 'l' added either through the formation of a diminutive or in analogy with coule1 (cf. DEAF hovel H642.
