The form issel is a cross reference to the following entry:

[heesel] (c.1290)

[ gdw]

[ FEW: 16,121b *haisi; Gdf: 4,430c haseau; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF: H72 haise; DMF:  haseau; TLF: ; OED: ; MED: ; DMLBS: ]
essel,  issel;
pl. esseaus

The possible confusion of this word with the very similar essel (‘axle-tree’) and essele1 (‘armpit’) is highlighted in bibb roth (G) 861-62, to the extent even that different manuscripts provide different Middle English glosses. Some confusion is also possible with ussel (see commentary for that entry).
