mauviz (s.xii2)

[ gdw]

[ FEW: 16,495b mæw; Gdf: ; GdfC: 10,114a malvis; TL: 5,1322 mauvis; DEAF:  mauvis; DMF:  mauvis; TLF: ; OED:  mavis n.1; MED:  mavis; DMLBS: 1738c maviscus ]
malvys,  malviz;  mauvés,  mauveyz;  mauvice,  mauvis,  mauvyz;  maveys,  mavis,  maviz,  mavus;  mawisse,  mauvuis (l. mauwis?)  ii 140.71

This word has the same etymology as mauve (see mauve1), and there are also shared forms: as a result, there is some confusion between what are in fact two quite distinct (and easily distinguished) species. For the general problem about bird-names, which is endemic in Anglo-Norman and especially in the gloss materials, see further Trotter, ‘Tote manere d’oiseaus: les noms d’oiseaux en anglo-normand’, Cahiers de lexicologie 103 (2013), 125-143, available online here.
