montan (s.xiii1)

[dd]

FEW: Gdf: GdfC: TL: DEAF: DMF: TLF: OED: MED: DMLBS:

The origins of this word are unclear. It could be a variant of muntain, translating as 'type of horse that comes from the mountains or can walk in the mountains'. However, the meaning and use of the word as substantive is not attested. It can alternatively be interpreted as a substantive form of the present participle of monter. However, while the translation 'an animal on which one can ride' appears more appropriate, it does not correspond to the usual meaning of the present participle.
