The word is surprisingly rare in Anglo-Norman, and in the case of the second sense the context is not entirely transparent. In Horn Silauf is the foster-father of Aalof, and consequently the word is interpreted as ‘foster-father’ by the editor of the text and in AND¹. That sense, however, is not attested in the other dictionaries. However, the variant reading suggests that the subject of fud is Aalof and not Silauf, and therefore the ki of the base MS may have to be read as a dative: ‘to whom’. In that case norriçon should be translated, as can be expected, as ‘foster-child’.
