[ gdw]

[ FEW: ; Gdf: ; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF: ; DMF: ; TLF: ; OED: ; MED: ; DMLBS: ]

Compound with M.E. (?)

The word is unique to this attestation, where it is used with reference to the vill of Marehem (Lincolnshire). The text-editor does not consider it a name, but fails to provide a translation, leaving the term unexplained. One possible interpretation is that the first half of the word may be read as a dialectal variant of M.E. aspe n. (i.e. 'asp tree'), and that the second half is a variant spelling land. Thus, the word could be interpreted as ‘asp-land’, i.e. woodland consisting of asp trees? Further evidence for this is lacking.
