peniwort (c.1250)

[ gdw]

[ FEW: ; Gdf: ; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF:  paniwit; DMF: ; TLF: ; OED:  pennywort n.; MED:  peniwort n.; DMLBS: ]
paniwort,  paniwit (l. paniwrt?)
M.E.

The interpretation of the term paniwit as paniwrt (and consequently its inclusion here) was suggested by the editor of TLL, on the basis of wrt being a possible variant spelling of wort listed by the MED (see wort n.2). However, the identification of papaver as ‘pennywort’ is very unlikely, as the plant has a very different kind of leaf (which is certainly not penny-shaped). An alternative interpretation would be to read paniwit as a deviant spelling of panifest (which also produced spellings like paniphet or panwhet.
