regal2 (c.1300)

[gdw]

[ FEW: ; Gdf: ; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF: ; DMF: ; TLF: ; OED: ; MED: ; DMLBS: ]

The etymology of this plant name remains obscure, but may be the same as that of regal1. Its sense is derived from the Middle English glosses (kukuspitte and cucukesmete, cf. MED cokkou n., which seems to preclude an association with the plant regalise.
