sort2 (1427-28)

[gdw]

[FEW: ; Gdf: ; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF:  sort 4; DMF: ; TLF: ; OED:  sort n.3; MED:  sort n.2; DMLBS: 3139b sors]
soortt,  sorte

This unit of measurement is found only in English sources, and the DMLBS and OED suggest it may derive from the same etymology as sort1. It is unclear what this measure stands for: while the DMLBS interprets it as ‘basketful (?)’, the editor of Port Bks argues that one ‘sort’ of fruit equals three pieces.

( 1427-28 ) .C. sort de frut - cust. frank.  10
