stapilhun (s.xiv)

[gdw]

[FEW: ; Gdf: ; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF: ; DMF: ; TLF: ; OED: ; MED: ; DMLBS: ]

The origin of this word remains unclear. The definition is based upon the Latin fundas et glandes: ‘slings and sling-stones’ (with the primary meaning of glans ‘acorn’). Confusingly, several manuscripts gloss the same passage as plates de plum ‘sheets of lead’ (TLL ii 136.49 and 151.49).
