M.E. (?)

The origins of this word are obscure. It may be related to Anglo-Norman tristre1, ‘hunting station, appointed place where a hunter awaits the game’, and compound of Anglo-Norman tristre and Middle English ivel ‘evil’ (MED ivel a.). On the semantic link between the hellhounds and the S Clem example, see S Clem ants iii 106.11462.n.
