The origin of the term is unclear, and the definition is based on the context of its only attestation in Court Bar. One possible interpretation is to derive the word from the Latin vappa, which has the sense ‘insipid’, ‘rotten’ or ‘badly cooked’. This produced Modern English vapid and Continental French gape. However, none of these instances seem to use to word as a noun or with reference to a type or quality of beer.
