As is the case in Continental French, the word’s etymological sense of ‘ladle, large spoon’ (cf. FEW 9,176b), already seems to have developed into that of ‘pot, large vessel’. The word is rare though in Anglo-Norman, especially compared to the relative frequency of its diminutive form possonet. As yet, no attestations of the root, i.e. poche in the sense of ‘ladle, large spoon’ (cf. DMF poche 3) have been found in Anglo-Norman.
