Despite a different etymology and meaning, the adjective may at times have been confused with raié (‘rayed, with a striped or paneled pattern’), which also seems to have used the variant spelling roié. The attestation in Waldef bb may ultimately also represent an instance of raié, so that the senses of roé remain confined to a type of shield decoration and the Anglo-Norman translation of Latin pallia rotata.
